Freightliner success at the Rail Freight Group (RFG) Awards 2021.

Freightliner, a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W), and one of its valued employees, was recognised with two award wins at Thursday’s RFG Awards 2021 ceremony at the De Vere Latimer Estate in Chesham.
Mossend-based train driver, Heather Waugh, won the ‘Outstanding Individual Contribution’ award.  Heather has worked tirelessly to promote diversity, inclusion and mental health awareness in the rail industry, as well as promote the industry as a viable career, particularly for women.  Her win prompted a standing ovation from the awards reception such is the recognition of Heather’s phenomenal contribution to these causes.
Freightliner was also successful in the ‘Community and Environmental Responsibility’ category for their intermodal train lengthening and ‘jumbo’ train initiatives.
With a steep reduction in passenger numbers and a thinned-out passenger train timetable, Freightliner has worked with Network Rail and customers, Tarmac and Mendip Rail Limited, to identify opportunities to trial new types of services to challenge the capability limitations of the network and to improve the efficiency and productivity of existing services by trialling longer and heavier trains.  This has also enabled Freightliner to further enhance rail’s sustainability credentials by supporting further reductions in carbon emissions per tonne of freight moved by rail.

Commenting on these wins, Freightliner’s Managing Director of UK Rail Tim Shakerley said: “I am delighted that Heather’s unfaltering commitment and genuine concern for people, their mental health and welfare and her unwavering support for the vital work of Samaritans on mental health awareness issues have been recognised and applauded.  Her drive and passion in the promotion of women in the rail industry is fantastic, and her award is truly deserved.

“With decarbonisation high on the agenda, to be recognised in the Community and Environmental Responsibility category is also particularly pleasing.  Freightliner has responded with flexibility, agility and ingenuity to the changing landscape due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and I am delighted that our contribution to further the rail industry’s reputation in support of the government’s net zero target by 2050 has been recognised at this year’s RFG Awards.”
